Ask us about any plant you own, whether or not it came from this shop, and do not worry if it turns up in a paper sack — most of them do. The more of the last month you can tell us about, the more useful your answer will be.

We close the week between Christmas and New Year’s, and on the two hottest days of most summers, when the front room becomes impossible for the plants and for us. You’ll find a note on the door and on this page whenever that happens.

Look for the north side of Ankeny, mid-block between 14th and 15th: green awning, and a bike rack that was here before we were.
- On foot or by bike: the Ankeny bike route runs right past the door. There is rack space for four bikes, and you are welcome to wheel yours inside when it is raining.
- By bus: a short walk from the Burnside stops, four blocks up from the 12th Avenue crossing.
- By car: free two-hour street parking on Ankeny and on 15th. Skip the lot behind the building — it belongs to the bakery, and they will have you towed.
- Carrying a big pot? Park in the loading space on 15th and come in through the front; we will hold the door and find you a hand truck.
Bringing a plant in
Please do. Wednesday through Friday afternoons are quietest, so that is when you’ll get the most of our attention. Bring the plant in its own pot if you can — half of what we need to know is down in the soil rather than up in the leaves — and if it turns out to be a rot question, expect us to tip it out and make a small mess on the counter.
What you’ll want to have ready: how long you have had it, roughly how often you water, which window it sits nearest and how far back from the glass, anything that changed in the month before it went wrong (you moved it, repotted it, turned the heat on, opened a new draft), and whether you have been feeding it.
If you want a run at it on your own first, the two guides cover most of what we would ask anyway: the watering guide for anything limp or browning, and the shadow test for anything that has simply stopped growing.

Treat the questions below as a checklist: they are the five things we would ask you at the counter anyway, and working through them is usually half the diagnosis. Nothing here has a mailbox behind it — when you have your answers, send them to [email protected] or call (503) 555-0142 during open hours. Email gets answered in one batch on Tuesdays, so give us a week in spring.
Three things to ask somebody else. We will not name a plant from a photograph of one leaf — that is guesswork, and we get it wrong often enough to stop trying. We do not advise on outdoor garden planting, which is a different trade. And we cannot tell you whether a plant is safe for your particular animal: call your vet, who will actually know.
